LOAN AND MERCANTILE CO. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report:—The official opening of the new saleyards took place at Stortford Lodge yesterday to one of the most representative attendances of buyers and vendors ever seen at a public auction in Hawke’s Bay. Prices all round for sheep and store cattle ruled in favour of vendors, and this was also the case with some pens of beef. We yarded and sold 3500 sheep, 40 head beef, 50 head store cattle, and prices realised by us were as under:—

Sheep.—Fat ewes (fair weights) 12s lOd to 12s lid, medium 10s 9d to 12s Bd, wethers in forward condition from 12s 7d to 14s 4d for an exceptionally choice line of four-booths; a good line of lambs realised 9s 4d, whilst cull lambs in fair order brought 6s 3d; two and four-tooth ewes changed hands at 10s lid; the Rakamoana soundmouth ewes, after spirited competition, were transferred to a South Island buyer at 11s 7d to 11s 8d; a line of late shorn half-bred ewes from Pohui realised 10s 6d.

Horses.—£B 5s was the highest price reached for horses entrusted to our care.

Pigs.—The entry of 110 pigs from a local grower met with dull competition, and consequently were not sold.

ADDINGTON MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. There was a large attendance at Addington yards to-day, farmers especially being well represented. Fat Cattle.—The entry comprised 232 head, and the quality was better than for some weeks past. The sale opened badly, and, though there was some improvement as it went on, was always irregular. The best prices were about equal to those of the previous week, ordinary to prime beef selling at the rate of 20s to 24s per 1001b. Fat Sheep.—There was a fair entry, including some very prime lines of both wethers and ewes and a few fair merino wethers. The sale opened well, but then slackened considerably for a while, afterwards recovering and closing firm. Old ewes, however, made no improvement upon recent rates. Both exporters and butchers competed well for all good lots. Prime crossbred halfbred wethers made 21s to 245, lighter from 18s 6d, prime heavy ewes 18s 6d to 23s 4d, fair to good 17s to 18s, aged 14s 9d to 16s 6d, merino wethers 13s 7d to 14s 7d. Fat Lambs, —About 2000 were entered, including a largo proportion of prime quality. They met with spirited competition from both butchers and exporters, with the result that prices advanced 6d to Is. Tegs up to 17s for a pen from R. Beattie, of Rolleston; prime freezers 15s to 16s 6d, others 12s to 14s 6d.

Store Sheep and Lambs.—The entry was large, but the quality was not above the average. An improved tone was manifested, and the previous week's sales were fully maintained, ewes particularly being keenly competed for at an advance of Is, while wethers and lambs brought fully previous values. Wethers from 17s to 14s 9d, ewes X7s 6d to 8s 5d for ewes, lambs 12s lOd to 10s 2d.

Pigs.—The entry was good both in number and quality, and the demand was equal to the supply, except for small stores, which were lower, while baconers, porkers, and large stores were firm. Baconers 47s to 57s (equal to 4jd per lb), porkers 34s to 47s (sd), choppers 45s to 655, large stores 2ds to 595, medium 265, small from 15s downwards.
