AN IMPERIAL LABOUR BUREAU. LONDON, April 12. General Booth is organising an Imperial Labour Bureau for sending emigrants where they are most needed. The sum of £1,000,000 is required to develop the scheme. General Booth hopes that the British and Canadian Governments will subscribe £50,000 each, and the Australian and African States similarly. The General will visit Australia in a few months’ time to negotiate with the various Governments. A conference of Salvationists from all parts of the world will shortly be held in a huge structure which is being erected on vacant land in the Strand.
AUSTRALIAN OPINIONS. (Received April 13, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 13. Mr Copeland, Agent-General for New South Wales, interviewed on the subject of General Booth’s proposals, said that Salvationists ought to begin with the unemployed, of whom there was a considerable sprinkling in Australia, owing to the drought. Aus- , tralia was willing to give facilities for the industrious who had saved something to settle on the land, but on no account would she have the Motherland’s derelicts. Sir Horace Tozer (Queensland), interviewed, said that if the vicious criminal and submerged elements wore omitted the scheme would be all right. The colonies wanted the best that the Motherland could send. He advised the Salvationists to distribute those approved by the representatives of the colonies. Any attempt to convey thither criminals, wastrels, and vicious persons would be strongly resisted in Australia.
