[OWN COaBESPONDINT.'j At the Police Court on Monday mcrning, John Baker was charged with the theft oi a waterproof coat of the value of 50s, the property of J. Alexander. Sergeant Cruickshank, who prosecuted, explained that the owner of the coat had hung it up in a hotel when going into tea. The defendant had taken the coat from the peg and sold it to a second-hand dealer. Evidence was given by R. J. Dales with reference to the sale of the coat. The defendant was fined 60s, or in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Donald M‘Leod was charged with receiving the coat knowing it io have lieen stolen. The defendant pleaded not guilty, and said that although he sold the coat to Dales on behalf of Baker he was not aware that it had been stolen. The defendant was discharged. Messrs Rose and Mackay, J.P.’s, presided.
