SCIENCE CONGRESS.
[PRESS association.] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science met this forenoon. At a meeting of the General Council, it was resolved that the date of the Adelaide meeting of 1906 be September, and that the 1908 meeting be held in Brisbane in June.
The resignation of Mr H. C. Russell, formerly Government astronomer at Sydney, as general treasurer, owing to ill-health, was received with regret. Mr David Carmen, of Adelaide, was appointed as his successor. Professor Baldwin Spencer was appointed Chairman of the present council, and Miss W. Howchin and Mr J. if. V. Madsen local secretaries for the Adelaide meeting, with Professor Bragg as treasurer.
Wet weather, which appears to have set in for a few days, will put an extinguisher on all outdoor functions. The inaugural meeting was held in the evening, in the Garrison Hall, when there was a large attendance. The Mayor welcomed the delegates on behalf of the city. His Excellency the Governor presided, and welcomed the delegates on behalf of the colony. In the course of his speech, Lord Ranfurly referred to the services rendered to science by Sir James Hector and Captain Hutton..
A telegram from the Premier was read, cordially welcoming the visitors. Professor David’s presidential address occupied two hours in delivery. Bishop Nevill proposed a vote of thanks, and the proceedings terminated.
The various sections will meet tomorrow, when the presidents will deliver their addresses.
