HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONDAY, OCTOBEB 13. ’ Present-, Mowrs W. Mirimpton (chairman), J. S. Giblin, T. Crows. G> A. f; Macdonald, G. Bes.S. D. D. McLean, ;■ G. Kymsr, and T. M. Chambers. j Leave of absence was granted to Mr t F. ffi, lioarte. | i rr re a su r y irtiiJ&tins that the £3200 fe lotu for the Tuki Tuki bridge was cow ; available for espsediture.—Application ■ to be made, , \ a. Small, calling attention to the bid slate ct the road between the Tatar kuri river and Mangatutu.-Lett to c,oilman, ~ . ~ ) m i ; a»eri. To Ante, nuking that the council send u« its grader to form tho road through Mr Grooms’s property.— Grrdor not at present available tor this Maraekakaho, asking that the Kereto road bo placed in a proper state of repair.—r. eceiving attention. ■ PAKOWHAI BRIDGE, Nelson Bros, wrote asking why their talcs on the Pakowhai bridge were so largely increased. Although they had agreed to giro a large annual contnba--1 tion towards payment of interest on the bridge, they thonght it oonld be in no way iooked upon as a bridge bmlt tor private convenience, as it was as largely rued by the public as any bridge in the county. 'I hey urged that whatever the legal poritiqn might be, justice demanded that an agreement with the Koad Board should be faithfully earned out by both sides. , The chairman explained that when this bridge was erected the value of Mr Nelson’s property was £50,000 cut of a total of £73,000 on which the rate was levied. Had Mr Nelson come in under the special rating his liability would have teen £95, but he had previously offered to contribute £SO a year towards the bridge, which was accepted. He claimed that this exempted him from contiibuting further to the interest on the special lean. The chairman pointed out that a mistake was made m the brat instance in not levying the rate for bridge over the whole of the Heretauuga district, instead of only on two pro- , parties, Mr Nelson’s and Mr Williams. >. which had since then been cut up. The Pakowhai bridge was one of the most u eful in the district, being used by many cottiers. He sympathised with Mr Nelson in his position, and so no doubt did the majority ct the members of the council, and it was a case where the special rate should be paid out of ordinary revenue, but this could not be done The Auditor-General said the , rate must be collected, and apparently there waa no way out o! the difficulty, The council had no alternative m the It was decided that the rnatfcer be left in the hands of the chairman to make further inquiries for nest meeting. BROOKFIELD ROAD BRIDGE.

The sub-committee having inspected w the site and taken into consideration t; any ob. traction to traffic likely to occur d during heavy floods, were of opinion b that to erect an expensive work over the d present waterway would be unwise. The j present bridge was ample for ordinary g : traffic. In flood time, until the actual p course of the overflow from theTutae- d kuti was more clearly defined, no postfive eite could be arrived at. The com- hj mittee ware of opinion, however, that Q should the main stream of tee Tutaekun d river be permanently diverted into the t waterway crotuod by the existing bridge at Brookfield, a larger work than the t present bridge would be required.- £ Adopted. « oveeseee’s bspobt. i Mr Orr reported;— , ' Meinee Hiding, Metal repairs f Kspier-I'aradale - road and Shamrock-Meanea-road, also erection of bridge at I washout, Taradaletoad, have been cam- I pleted.
