DANEVIRKE.

[from oub own oobbespohdknt,]

September 20, 1901. The large stables which are being erected for Mr Andrew's Railway Hotel, by Mr Ward, contractor, Napier, are now approaching completion, and will form a valuable addition to the conveniences of the hostelry.

Mr Frank Knight met with a painful accident yesterday afternoon whilst attending a saw at the Tiratu Company’s yard, Mangstera. It appears he was cutting up come timber with a firewood saw and a piece flew off and struck him across the face, cutting it open and injuring his nose. He was immediately sent in a cab to Dr. Macallan, who stitched up the wound and attended to the sufferer.

The post-oflioe was closed and flags half-masted yesterday afternoon in sympathy with the people of the fluted States in their great loss, which has brought out genuine feelings of heartfelt sorrow from the whole of the civilised world.

Oor influenza epidemic has not yet been stamped out, and several sawmills hj .vn been closed in consequence. It has been suggested that the returned troopers are responsible for its severity this year, and I notice the health officer in Wellington has been asked to report thereon, but it is hard to understand why, if this be the case, it reaches men in camp in the back blocks the same as those who live in town. The strongest constitutions appear to be the most severely tried. ‘ The equinoctial gales appear to have exhausted their force now, and beyond the blowing down of fences, trees, ifco., no serious damage has resulted here.

Sportsmen who follow the gentle art are beginning to look to their rods and tackle, in view of the early opening of the season, and I understand fish are plentiful in the streams about here.
