BYE-ELECTIONS.
CHRISTCHURCH AND PATEA SEATS [EI TELEaKAfilt.] Christchurch, Thursday. The election for the vacant Christchurch seat passed off very quietly to-day, and polling was small, only 9707 votes being oast out of 17,355 on the roll. It was generally anticipated that the contest between Messrs G. J. Smith and Charles Taylor would be close, and that Mr Turnbull’s support of denominational grants would mean a loss of ground to him. The totals are;— G. J, Smith 3912 Charles Taylor 3418 A, H, Turnbull 2377 Interest seemed to be aroused in the evening, when crowds assembled in the vicinity of the newspaper offices, several thousands congregating before the Lyttelton Times buildings, from which all three candidates returned thanks to their supporters. Wellington, Thursday. When the Patea telegraph office closed to-night the result of the polling was as follows Haselden 790 Heslop 716 Eemington 4-40 The results from 25 polling places have yet to come in. Advices state that the result will be close.
