MALE AND FEMALE PUPIL TEACHERS.
Sib, — I would like to draw the attention of the Education Board to the great number of female pupil teachers in the service of the Board, and to see if thia moat undesirable state of thinga cannot be improved. In the liat of pupil teachers published in yesterday's Herald of those who sat at the recent examinations there W6re 45 femalea and only six male pupil teachers. Thia great disproportion has been growing greater every year, and it means that in the near future nearly all our schoolmasters must be brought from outside. I think it behoves the Board to try for a remedy, and I would suggest that it be enacted that in every school where several pupil teaohers are employed a fixed proportion must be male 3. Very few boys now mako any attempt to enter the teaching profession, thinking in view of the flood of girl applicants their chance would be very slight ; but let it be known the vacancies are for boys, and, though the pay is rather small, I feel certain there would be sufficient capable applicants. I hope the Board will consider this matter at their next meeting.— l am, &p., ' Education.-' Napier, July 19th, 1900.
