SHOCKING AFFAIR ON THE WEST COAST.
Reefton, Thursday.
Tbe Mataketake correspondent of tbe Reefton Times writes that two men named Hargrs&ves and Haldan bad been drinking at May's public- bonce on Sitnrday night, whon a ro<v ensiifd, during which they put Mcy on a fire. A man named Mitchell succeeded In getting a wire off from Murchison for the pojlce in spite of tbe danger he was exposed to, as Hargreaves openly swore he would shoot anyone who attempted to go to the telegraph oißee. All Saturday night the plaoe was In an uproar. Guns were being fired continuously. The store was stripped of everything with the exception of a little beer. After taking May off the fire they burned all his clothes. He is very much burned, although not seriously, and he cannot leave, his bnd, A. constable went up from Lyell at 3 o'clock on Monday, and found i& necessary to swear in four special constables as Hargreaves deolares he will not be taken alive. This occurred In what Is known as the Lost Tribe district.
