NEWSPAPERS FOUND IN RAILWAY CARRIAGES
It will be rather a surprise to most peoplo to learn that at the London railway stations alone thousands upon thousands of newspapers and periodicals ar- 1 found daily by the porters; these paptij being left by passengers who have read them and don't care to be further burdened with them.
In regard to the disposal of these, various rules obtain, some companies giving their men tho privilege of taking the6e as a perquisite, whilst others have all the papers found stored in a room sot apart for the purpose. Where the porters have the privilege of taking the i papers, the latter are all stored together and, so far as tbe newspapers are concerned, are sold in bulk, the money being divided amongst a certain set of men according to tbeir class. But in many oases current numbers of the higherpriced periodicals come to hand, and in order that good value may be got for these, one or two contracting newsagents look over the finds daily, and sell what they oan at their shops.
Hundreds of the higher-priced papers whioh are not so disposed of are made up into sets and sold by men who contract for them. A porter at ono of the Metropolitan atatlona told the writer that he reckoned that the papers ho found brought him about three shillings a week. In one notable caao ,Uo papers are sent by the company in whose carriages they have been found to the various hospitals.
