HASTINGS.
(FROM OUU OWN COniIKSI'ONDENT.) August 29, 1592. I regret to learn that Mr Tutiuir, who retires by rotation from the ollire of Borough Councillor, will not oiler hiu.self for re-election, us his other duties take up »o much of his tiuu 1 . He will prob.ibly, however, have an elliciciu .successor in Mr T. Croase, who at the ruquot of mivimiJ of our burgesses has ulloned himself to be nominated by Mr Tjcrmuu and Dr. Llnuey. Mr Cross-e is so well known ami respected both tor lih l.us-iiK'Si ability and personal qualiu'ecitioni thut any words from me in his behalf wonld bo huperiluoiu. I would remind your readers of tho concert of the Choral and Orchestral | Society which will bo given to morrow (Tuesday) evening. Choruses and songs, overtures, and violin nnd cornet bolo.s make up a stroug programme which ought to please every boily. Lite last Friday night or eirly on Saturday moruiag a daring burglary was. committed at the Carlton Hotel. Tlio thief broke iuto ttie bar and took theroIroni a cash- box containing notes, cheques, ' aud sliver to a large amount. The Hastings district bchool opened today with an attendance of 398 pupils, the highest ou record. Of these nearly 50 were neiv pupils, the children of recent arrivals iv the district, 'lhis speaks volumes for the progress of Hastings. There is one matter tho full importance ot which the parents of nome of tho children do not suem to reali&e, although it has more lhau ouee been mcnlionul by the head-master, and thia is the importance of entaring children for their first term immediately after the holidays J iollowing the examination. They thus l ure enabled to start fair iv the curriculum aud keep abreast of ouu another, whereas those who do not join till Christmas find themselves toiling hopelessly iv the rear of their more fortunate comrades, and consequently "dou't like school," This t keeping back the chlld'en i-) unfair to the t3iichers, and places the children themselves at n di.»uivantuge. It is theiefore to bo hoped that parents whose c.liildieu are of the school ago wilt not fiil to send thorn immediately. < l m .niMiam I
