THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT.
His Excellency the Governor arrived in . Napier last evening by special conveyance from Taupo. He was accompanied by Mies Jervois, Major Jervois, and Captain Fortescue, A.D.C. The party put up at the Masonic Hotel, where a suite of rooni3 had been previously engaged by telegraph. At 8.30 o\:lock his Excellency inspected the Volunteers in Clive-square. A regular parade had been called, and it had been intended that the Rifles and Artillery, after inspection, should march to the Spit and take part in combined drill with the Naval Artillery. These arrangements were altered in consequence of his Excellency's arrival, Captain Blytho waiting upon the Governor and requesting that Sic would inspect the companies. The request was acceded to, and a messenger was sent to the Spit with the order for the Navals to march to town. 3he Rifles (Lieutenant Chicken) and Artillery. (Lieutenant Pram) mustered at the drill-* shed, and headed- by the Garrison Band marched to Browninß*6treet to await the / • arrival of the Navals, the band in the meanwhile playing a selection of lively airs. When the Spit detachment (Captain Smith) reached Browning-street the corps was marched to Clive-square, where , a large concourse of persons had already , assembled. Shortly after the Volunteers , reached tho square (Captain M'Cartney ] in command) his Excellency, accompanied , by Major Jervois, Captain Fortcscne, ! Captain Blythe, and Captain Preece arrived on the ground. His Worship the ( Mayor was also present. The party was received with the general saluto, and the , band struck up a lively quickstep. j His Excellency having inspected the •corps addressed the officers briefly. He j «aid that the smartness and efficiency j of the men reflected great credit upon | the officer commanding the district, the j other officers, and. <he men themselves' . He also paid a compliment to the admir- j able playing of the band. He congratu- ( lated the district upon the martini, spirit t displayed, in common with the rest ot the , colony, and urged the necessity for beiuir ] prepared for defending the colony against , attacks which might be feared owing to ( the unsettled state-of Europe. He hoped , the attacks might never come, but ob- \ served that to be prepared for eventualities t . was tho only wise course. In refereuce to j Napier he said the worst that was to be , feared was a flying visit from a hostile t cruiser, in which case, the Artillery, as- | sisted by the other companies, wonld no doubt give a good account of themselves. c In the larger centres of the colony the j possibility of more. serious attacks had to B he gnarded against, and fortifications and „ a permanent force to man them were ncces- B sary, but in this distnet the Volunteers v must be relied upon. His Excellency j conclnded by again .complimenting the t officers and men of the garrison. j After the conclusion of hi 3 Excellency's f remarks Captain M'Cartney put the com- t panics through a number of evolutions, f the men acquitting themselves creditably. a The Governor and party, accompanied by Mr Ormond, M.H.R., and chairman of f, the Harbor Board ;Mr Goodall, engineer s to the Board ; and those members of the h Board who can be present, will pay a visit 0 of inspection to the bieakwater this morn- • _ ing.
