TRADE FRAUDS IN SREFFIELD.

3 For some time past a commitee of the 8 Sheffield Town Council lias been holding 1 an enquiry into allegations of practices '' carried on by some local merchants' and * manufacturers calculated to seriously endanger the reputation of the town and ",, to affect its trade. The result of twolve ' sittings is Jhat they havo abopted a report showing that every charge had been 1 proved with cbo exception of two, upon which' no evidence was offered. The proved allegations were that- German cutlery and tools aro largely imported into the warehouses of the Sheffield mer- [ chanis and manufacturers; that, while , some of tbesu are again sent; out as confossedly of German make, others are sent : out as Sheffield make by means of false i descriptions on the goods themselves, or by cards or. labels, and that large ' numbers of retail tradesmen and other | oonsumers buy the German goods thus sent out under the impression that they ' are Sheffield made. Other allegations were that goods of low quality were \ manufactured in Sheffield, and by means of false descriptions were represented to be of a quality they did nofc possessThese charges, too, the committee wil I report to have been proved. In order to puta stop to such praolices, they have recommended the council to petition in favor of Mr Mundella's Trademark Bill. — """" ' ' . -
