DEFENCE OF NAPIER.
Major Cautley and Lieutenant Douglas landed from theHinetnoa to-day, and interviewed his Worship the Mayor at three o'clock on the subject of defence. It haß transpired that the Government would have forwarded a large gun here if there had been one to send. Major Cautley's opinion is that in the event of war with a naval power the only attraction Napier would offer to a hostile cruiser would be its store of coals. Sir, — With reference to the above clipping from a local journal permit me to say : Ist, that so far as I am aware Major Cautley and Lieut. Douglas did not interview the Mayor at 3 o'clock to-day ; 2nd, that not only has it not transpired, but has not to my knowledge even been stated, that the Government would have forwarded a large gun here if there had been one to send ; and 3rd, that the idea of a store of coals being an attraction to Wapier for hostile cruisers is as much news to me aa it probably is to you. — J. am, W. I. SI'EUCER. Napier, 27th April, ISSS. j
