COMMERCIAL.
♦ Herald Opficb, Monday evening. Mes9rS Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following report from their London firm, dated December 7th, 1883:— Wool.— The fourth series, which begun on 20th November, will close ta-morrow, when 160,167 bales will hive been catalogued. As the total quantity available, after deducting 6000 bales forwarded direct, and adding, say 57,000 bales held over, amounts to about 155,000 bales, it is evident that a considerable qnantity of second-hand wool has made its appearance. During the second week of the series the tone of the market became distinctly firmer, especially for merinos of the best class, and I for crossbreds, but since then the attendance of | buyers has fallen off, and prices now are practically the same as at the opening-. Foreign competition has been weak, and only about 45 per cent, of the total has been bought for the Continent. .The number of bales held over will amount to about 16,000, ss that the market is fairly well cleared.
