Tho House resumed at 7.30. fencing act. Mr Smith moved the second reading of the Fencing Act Amendment Bill, to authorise settlers in bush country to clear 33 feet on each side of their fences. Mr Stevens supported the bill, and Messrs Hursthouse, Beetham, Bryce, Pyke, and W. Buchanan opposed it. The bill was read a second time. the gold duty. Mr Seddon moved that the House go into committee on the Gold Duties Abolition Bill. Mr Rollestion said that if tho bill passed the colony would have to take over £30,000 liabilities of local bodies that were secured on the gold duty, and would also have to provide for necessary works in future. Messrs J. 0. Brown, Pyke, Petrie, and Monro supported the bill. Mr Hursthouse was in favor of a gradual reduction rather than a total abolition of the duty. Mr Conolly opposed the bill, remarking that if passed it should be made optional. Mr Seddon replied, contending that a road maintenance rate or the proposed rate on Crown lands would make up to the local bodies for the abolition of the gold duty. The House divided, and the motion for going into committee waa negatived by 40 to 34. WIDTH OE STREETS AND ROADS. The Width of Streets and Roads Bill (J. W. Thompson) passed through committee with amendments. NATIVE COMMITTEES. Mr Tomoana moved the second reading of the Native Committees Empowering Bill. Tho bill was opposed by Mr Bryce. Mr Tawhai supported the bill, and so did Mr Weston. The debate was adjourned. The House rose at 1.10.
