The Government have purchased tha hulk Clara Hargreaves for the reception and fumigation of mails. She will ba placed at Orakei Bay as an intermediate quarantine station. At a meeting this evening of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners resolutions were passed expressing sympathy with and promising support to the employes of the Union Sash and Door Company now " locked out." Representatives of the Bricklayers' Society and the Auckland Timber Sawmill Company met afterwards, and endorsed the resolution. They stated that the men with whom they were associated, as well as those of the building trade • would assist the men on strike. One speaker expressed the belief that the new proposal of extended hours was intended to break down the eight hours' system established for nearly 20 years in ths province in the building and datet trades.
Floyd hai received a letter from
Messenger, the Australian oarsman, notifying that he is coming to New Zealand, and asking Floyd to arrange a match with Hearn if possible. Floyd has telegraphed to Hearn on the subject. Messenger has some idea of settling in this colony and following his calling of boatbuilding. Dtjnedin, Friday. The inter-provincial cricket mateh — Canterbury v. Otago — began to - day. Otago scored 153 in their first innings, and Canterbury have lost sis wickets for 43 runs. Timartj, Friday. The weather has again turned cold, but fine, and harvesting operations are being carried on briskly. CnRiSTCHoRCH, Friday. The President of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association sent Home a cheese weighing 701 b last August, as an experiment to see what careful packing and choice of article would do. The cheese arrived in splendid condition and was pronounced by the different people who sampled it as equal to the best Cheddar. It wa3 packed in common calico and placed in a deal box with two inches of sawdust round it. No price was quoted, as the sample was so small, but the result proves that cheese can be safely sent Home, and is regarded with great satisfaction. Nominations close to-morrow evening at 9 p. m. for the Canterbury Jockey Club Great Autumn Handicap, a sweepstakes of 10 BOVB, with 300 added, and Mr Campbell's 100 guinea cup additional ; also for the Easter Handicap aud Flying Stakes.
Wellington, Friday. His Excellency has further prorogued Parliament until April 4th.
