(from a cobresponijent.)., Gisbornb, Friday. \ Mr J. M. Dargaville lias been appointed chairman and resident managing director of the East Coast Native Land and Settlement Company. Mr C. A. DeLautour, M.H.E., has been appointed., secretary, retaining his seat at the Board" of Directors. There was a large meeting of natives at Tolago Bay on Wednesday, when it was unanimously agreed to place a number of blocks of land in the company. The directors have been holding sittings of the Board for ;the past fbrt« ' night at Gisborne. . L (from: our own correspondent.) Waiboa, Friday. A very strong opposition is being organised here against Mr M'Donald. The leading residents are being actively canvassed on behalf of Mr Locke, and an influential committee is being formed to secure his return. Captain Porter will address a public meeting in the County Hall to-morrow night. ; PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Friday. . The remains' of the late. W. S. Moorhouse were conveyed on board the Government steamer Stella this afternoon. The funeral procession was very large, and included members of both Houses of Legislature, and also many of the prin-> cipal citizens of Wellington. The Wei-' lington Artillery corps, of which the deceased was formerly captain, also mastered strongly. Mr FitzGerald, Auditor, and Controller-General, left by the^sWahier, having been deputed by the Speaker and' the Premier to represent the Legislature at the funeral at Christchurch . . The de--ceased's family and some of his relations were also passengers by the Stella.

The remainder of the passengers and crew of the Wakatipu were admitted to pratique to-day. Mr Edward Stafford, solicitor, has announced his intention to contest one of the Wellington seats at the coming elections. . . '

The boat found at Island Bay belonged to the steamer Napier, it having been washed from the davits by a heavy sea on her last trip to Blenheim. ; ;

Auckland, Friday. The Board of Health has countermanded its order for calf lymph from Sydney pending certain enquiries whioh are about to be instituted. Medioal men here are greatly divided in opinion on the subject.

The Board of Education have decided to discontinue the 10 per cent, reduction from the salaries of teachers from the first of the present month. The Chairman said it was only fair that teachers should be placed on the same footing as civil servants. There was no reason why the reduction should continue when theGovernment had discontinued it. The question was one of ways and means. If the reductions were discontinued the difference would be £1900 ; there . was now a credit balance of £2500, and if it were found they had a deficit they could again revise the scale of salaries. The bulk of the salaries paid in Auckland were lower than those in other provincial districts.

Ten thousand shares have now been applied for in Auckland in the, South Pacific Steamship Company. The capital is to be £100,000, in shares of £5 each ; 2s 6d per share to be paid on application, 2s 6d on allotment, and calls of os to be made at intervals of not less than three months if required. It has been agreed that only 50,000 shares shall be issued to the public at present. The following gentlemen hare been appointed provisional directors : — Messrs J. M. Clark (Mayor), J. C. Firth, G-. B. Owen, T. Morrin, L. D. Nathan, John Chambers,; P. Cormiskey, A. C. Isaacs, C. J. Stone, D. H. M'Kenzie, A. H. Heather, Hugh F. Anderson, J. L. Wilson, Graves, Aickin, and Dr Campbell.

Mr DeLean, the President of the Presidcht French literary Club, has received a letter of dismissal from the German Club, of which he is a member. It is understood to be for a lecture lie delivered on "Judenheze in Germany", before the French Club, in which he strongly denounced German intolerance in the persecution of the Jews. Mr DeLean is a Belgian, but graduated at the Univeißity of Bonn. He intends to contest the right of the German Club in the matter.

The Waiwera hot springs and hotel of Mr Robert Graham have been sold to a (southern company for about £15,000. They will be continued as a sanatorium.

Christchuhoh, Friday. Carey's company made a decided hit with "Les Cloches de Corneville" tonight. The piece was beautifully dressed and mounted, and the audience, who were eager to compare it with Towle's amateur performance, appeared to be very well satisfied. '

It has been decided to form a company with a capital of £30,000 in £2

shares, to promote the various industries in connection with linseed.

The Mayor has issued a request to all tradespeople to close their shop fronts between 2 and 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon, when the funeral of the late Mr Moorhouse will take place. The Stella will be met on arrival by a special train by which the body will be brought to Christohurch.

The cutter Pana was wrecked at Flea Bay, Banks Peninsular, during the recent south-wester. The master and his two sons, who composed the crew, managed to get on to the rocks. The sons got ashore first, and hauled their father through the surf with a line. Tbe Pana Had Only been launched three months, and was uninsured. She belonged to tHe master (Westlake) and his sons. They saved.nothing. Her cargo was chiefly drain pipes for Akaroa, and some other odds and ends.
