He and Mr Sheehan visit Hamilton and Te Awamutu on Monday, and return to Auckland on Wednesday, without visiting the King country. The Governor, with Commodore Hoskins, goes to Tauranga and the lakes on Monday. The following have been elected Grammar School governors : — Messrs D. L. Murdoch, O'Rorke, and Hall. CARTERTON, April 6. A large saw mill at Taratahi, owned by Messrs Stuart Brothers, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. It is supposed to have caught fire accidentally. The census returns for Dunedin and suburban municipalities are as follows : — ■ Dunedin — Males, 11,605 ; females, 10,888 ; total, 22,493 Roslyn— Males, 766 ; females, 803 : total, 1569. Mornington—Males, 1098 ; females, 1149 ; total, 2207. Maori Hill -186 males, 157 females ; total, 343. St. Kilda and South Dunedin— Males, 1084 ; females, 1299. Caversham— Males, .1780 ; females, 1662 ; total, 3442. GRAHAMSTOWN, April 6. The Census returns show the borough population to be 2880 males, and 2575 females. The Thames County population is 4960, and the Piako County 447, making a total population in the Thames district of 10,423. In 1874, including Coromandel, the population was 12,272. The Coromandel returns are not yet complete. HOKITIKA, April 6. In Ryan's trial for murder, the jury, after being locked up all night, could not ' agree to a verdict. They were equally divided on the issue. The jury were discharged. The Court adjourned till the 29th April. The Rev. G. W. Russell has another letter in the Star to-night as follows : — "Despite the telegram sent by Father Henneberry to the Press Agency, stating that he did not denounce mixed and legal marriages at all, permit me to say that I stand to all the statements made in the second paragraph of my previous letter. He can deny them if he likes. His threats about perjury and libel are beneath notice." KUMARA, April 6. In the telegram, re Henneberry, with reference to his letter threatening Mr Brown, the word "police" should read "law officers." TAURANGA, April 6. The census returns show a European < population of 2944. The number of agricultural acres under grass and crops is 17,620. There were over 9000 bushels of wheat grown in Tauranga this season. The Waikato correspondent of the Say of Plenty Times writes, saying : — " Rewi and the natives are annoyed at the manner the Governor hurried through Waikato, and says that when Rewi found the Governor had returned to Auckland he went direct to a frontier settler, and requested him to go to Auckland and invite the Governor to return. He demurred, on the ground of not having credentials, whereupon Rewi handed him Potatau's seal, saying, * Well, here is all that remains of Potatou. Take that to the Governor, who will not disbelieve you.' Rewi further said that he regarded the Governor as the Queen, adding, ' And the Queen never tells lies.' The general impression in the Waikato is that the Governmenthurried the Governor through in such a manner that lie should reap as few laurels as possible, and exhibited a fidgetty anxiety that he should not meet the natives." OAMARU, April 6. The grain is now coming in in large quantities, but farmers ask more than buyers are willing to give, owing to the crops turning out better than expected. Wheat shows a downward tendency, and has receded to 4s for best samples ; oats are in good demand at 3s, 4s to 4s 6d ; breadstuff's are quoted f.o.b. ; flour, £11 10s to £12 ; oatmeal, £18 ; pearl barley, £20 ; pollard, £5 10s ; bran, £3 ss ; potatoes, 45s to 50s per ton. TIMARU, April 6. Grain quotations are about the same as last week, but wheat shows a somewhat downward tendency. Oats are scarce, and in better demand. In barley there are but few transactions to quote. WELLINGTON, April 6. The Government have decided to appoint Mr Blackett Engineer-in-Chief of the non-constructed railways for the North Island, and Mr Baird, District Engineer of Dunedin, to the same office in the South Island. These officers are to perform the duties formerly devolving upon Mr Carruthers. April 7. Mr Crawford, R.M. , has demanded from the Government that an enquiry be held into the charges made by Mr G. E. Barton against the officials of the R.M. Court. The application was sent in yesterday. A meeting between Sir George Grey and the Maori King will be held on the 10th inst. at Hikurangi. Several tons of flour have gone up. The meeting is expected to be large and important.
