THE INLAND HOSPITAL.

A meeting of the general committee of the Inland Hospital was held in the^Town Hall, Waipukurau, on Saturday, the 23rd inst., at 2 p.m. The following gentlemen were present ;— Messrs John Mackersey, Lake Station ;■ Rev. Mr Shearman, Waipukurau; Ashton St. Hill, Porangahau; Rechab Harding, Mount Vernon ; J. W. Thompson, Norsewood ; W. C. Smith, Waipukurau : R. Trestrail, Waipukurau; J. Stevens, Kaikora; H. A. King, Waipukurau ; J. Palmer, Waipukurau ; and the Hon. H. R. Russell, Waipukurau. On the motion of Mr Mackersey, seconded by Mr St. Hill, Mr Russoll tfiok the chair. The Chairman congratulated the committee on the favorable circumstances under which they now met, and referred to the correspondence on the subject of the hospital, which had been published in the Herald, and of which copies had. been extensively circulated. He read to the meeting his letter to the Hon. Mr Sheehan of Bth January, in which fuU explanations were made as to the past history of the movement in favor of an Inland Hospital at Waipukurau, 'and of its great importance to the surrounding districts, and of the • reasons why the matter had been suffered to lapse into j temporary abeyance. He then read the letter from the Colonial Secretary of 25th January, in reply to the above letter, agreeing on the part of the Government to give a subsidy of £500, which they were prepared to pay over as soon as required for expenditure, on condition that the site of 5 acres was conveyed- to. the Government. The Colonial -Secretary further, stated that if, after thT Hospital is established, a quarterly lift or paid -. subscriptions to the maintenance fund is furnished, the usual subsidy of £1 for every £1 contributed by the subscribers will be granted. The c hairman was instructed to acknowledge receipt of this letter and to express the grateful thanks of the promoters of the hospital for the liberality of the Government. The Chairman informed the meeting that including the sum collected and now in the Union Bank of Australia at Waipukurau at interest, he felt warranted in saying that a sum of not less than £700 would be: collected from subscriptions. He further informed the meeting that he was prepared at once to convey tothe Government the site which had been selected bythe committee, and which he had had surveyed and marked off by Mr Rochfort. * » -. The following resolutions were then agreed to :— • " X Ist. Moved by Mr Mackersey, seconded by Mr Smith, " That a bonus of £25 be offered for the best plan of an hospital tp cost £1000, and to afford the greatest amount of proper accommodation procurable for that amount of money, for not less than twelve patients." 2nd. Moved by Mr St. Hill, seconded by Mr Smith, " That a sub-committee be appointed to consist of the following gentlemen, viz. :— Drs Prood and Todd, Messrs Mackersey, Harding, Russell, W. Newman, Sydney Johnston, and White, Kaikora, and the Rev. Mr Shearman, five to be a quorum, and Mr Russell, convener, with power to advertise for plans and to report to another meeting of the general committee to be called foKthe purpose. The sub-committee to be Empowered also to collect the outstanding subscribtions, and to make a further canvass of the district for further funds." It was also given as an instruction to the committee to have the plans lodged with them by the 3rd April. The committee were further instructed to astertain the expense of fencing in and laying out the grounds, and to report on that and the question of water supply to the next general meeting of the committee. After a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting adjourned.
