DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING.

The competition, by the Napier Artillery Volunteers, for the district prizes (£6 ss), took place at the Tutaekuri rifle range yesterday morning, under the supervision of Major Withers. The firing commenced at about a quarter past six o'clock, and was not finished till half-past ten. Twentyseven members of the company took part in the competition—the largest number, we believe, that has competed in any single firing for a long time. The weather, notwithstanding a strong breeze blowing straight up the range, was favorable for good shooting. The highest score, 44 points, being one short of centres, was made by Gunner Ross,. Sergeant Sellars and Lieut. Pell coming next, with 43 points each. The above-mentioned sum, with the £5 presented to the company by the Hon. Col. Whitmore, was divided into five prizes, viz., Ist, £4 ; 2nd, £3 ss; 3rd, £2 ; 4th, £1; sth, £1. There was a good deal of excitement near the finish, as the allotment of the different prizes depended, as will be seen by reference to the score, on the last shot of at least six of the competitors. The conditions were —Ranges, 200, 400, and 500 yards ; five shots at each range. Targets —2oo yards, Bin. bull's-eye and 4ft. centre. The following are the scores of 30 points and upwards : —
