Hawke's Bay Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1868. OPENING OF TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION WITH WELLINGTON.

Yesterday evening, telegraphic communication was opened with Welliugton. Our own despatch was received soon after six o'clock, conveying the heads of the Governor's speech in opening the Assembly, and other items of information, which will be found elsewhere. Later in the evening, the arrival of tho English mail at the Bluff was telegraphed, aud the telegrams appear in this morning's issue. We congratulate our readers upon an event so characteristic of the progressive age we live in. It is a wonderful fact that there is no part of the i

colony south of Napier which cannot be communicated with by telegraph— that no important event can occur in any part of the colony without our receiving almost instantaneous notification of the same. Aud what now applies to the south only, will soon equally apply to Auckland aud the north. The great advantages of the telegraph are not, however, without some disadvantage, inasmuch as the information thus obtained is exceedingly expensive ; and this bi'ings us to say a word ov two upon matters purely personal. la a sparsely populated district like Hawke's Bay, where, there is no. room for material expansion iv. the subscription list of a journal, the cost of such information cannot be borne solely by a newspaper proprietor. In our case; we could not afford this heavy addition to office expenses, aud have therefore appealed to our subscribers to bear a share of the same. The value of late news will be acknowledged by all, and- we do not think, in view of high' telegraphic charges for transmission of the same, that the claim we. make will be deemed unreasonable.
