Confirmation of Mr. Broughton's Pate. — The Chronicle, of the 18th inst., says : — Mr. E. Broughton has returned from the front, with a confirmation of the report we lately mentioned as having reached Waingongoro, as to his brother's fate. It appears that the unfortunate gentleman never reached the pa, but was killed, while receiving a light from a native whom he met en route, by one of those who had decoyed j him to the pa. The weapon with which lie was struck down was a pouwhenua, one of those longhandled wooden tomahawk -looking articles, ' often seen in the hands of the natives. — N. Z. Advertise?', Oct. 23. Major Von Tempsky, under the new dynasty, proceeds to Wanganui, for the purpose of organising an irregular force to rout the rebels who have been implicated in the murders which have recently occiu*red in the neighborhood of Waitotara. We confess we are heartily glad that this unfortunate occurrence has terminated at length so satisfactorily, and that the j colonists are enabled, to retain the services of a gentleman who, above many others, possesses the peculiar tact and ability calculated to enable him to give a good account of himself and the men placed under his command. The natives at Wanganui want badly a wholesome chastisement, and we have no doubt Major Von Tempsky will give it to them with no niggard hand. Death through Exposure in the Snow. — The Otago Daily Times, of the 20th ult., gives the following melancholy story : — " We regret to learn that Mr. J. Shiels, the Superintendent of Mr. Holland's station, on the upper part of the Manuherikia, died last Friday from the effects of exposure to the weather. He left . Fullartons, or Five-mite, for Macrae's Flat, on ThmJSday afternoon, the 7th ult, and missing ffie'fr&ck was compelled to remain through the inorht in a, snow storm. In the morning he managed to ride to Macrae's flat, but so severely frost-bitten that he sank under it, and died on the 15th ult., at the residence of Mr. M'Queen."
