Commercial Intelligence. FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1861.
We cannot report any improvement in commercial transactions. On the contrary, business during the whole of this week has been altogether nominal, although the stores are well supplied with goods of all kinds. Money continues tight. The AdolpJius has brought a cargo of coal, and we hear that another vessel with a similar cargo is expected in about a week : so that we may hone for a cheaper supply of this article in comparison to last winter. The present quotations of oonl are 68s. to 70a. per ton; firewood, 265. to 255. per ton ; best wheat, Bs. per bushel ; flour, £26 per ton. We have to note a rise in the value of sheep, consequent on the great extent of grazing country recently leased from the natives. Many of these runs are, in consequence, but imperfectly stocked. The increase in value of sheep is nominally 4s. per head, but in point of fact the supply is wholly inadequate to the demand. Mr. Danvers reports that at the Auction Sale on Saturday last, the attendance of buyei'swas greater than on the previous week, and better prices were realized. One draught gelding was sold for £35 ; two others at £27 each; a good second hand cart fetched £14; and a set of second hand cart harness £5. A section in the township of Havelock, with frontage to Te Aute road, was knocked down at £26 ; and a section in the township of Hadley, with frontage to the Rua Taniwha road, realized £5 10s.
