By an overland arrival we have been favoured "with the following items of news 'from - Wellington, the bearer of which left on Friday the. 30th ult. On that day the "Esther" was topsail for the Chatham Islands, and on the - Tuesday following, the "Sea Serpent" was to leave for this port. On the same day the state of the poll for the superintendency was officially declared, the majority for Featherston being 310. The election for the city of two members to serve in the General Assembly ended with the following result :— Featherston, 360 ; Rhodes, 352 ; Bowler, 3-1-7 ; Wakefield, 340— the two first being of course elected. Between the three last the contest was an extremely close one — a tye having occurred on two different occasions. Brandon had been returned for the Wellington country district by a large majority over Brady. Both elections, it may be added, took place under the new roll.
