TARIFF ON MOTOR VEHICLES
CERTAIN ALLOWANCES MADE BRITISH MANUEACTURERS BENEFIT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 24. Tn a statement concerning the revision of the tariff in respect of motor vehicles assembled in New Zealand, the Hon. A. Hamilton, actingAlinister of Customs, to-day said that during Air. J. G. Coates’ visit to England the question was investigated and it had been decided to allow under certain conditions bodies for passenger motor vehicles (other than omnibuses) to he imported in the form of a shell, seat springs to be imported assembled in metal frame and upholstery and materials (of other than wool) to he imported cut to shape, but with no further process of manufacture other than that of the preliminary sewing performed thereon. Plain or machined metal pauels not being built up for the manufacture of all steel cabs .for commercial trucks or delivery vans will also be admitted at lower duties, if imported with the unassembled chassis with which they are to be used. Previous determinations made on December 4 last will he cancelled and new determinations to give effect to the decision of the Government will be published when Air. Coates returns to the Dominion. “It is confidently expected the new conditions will result in practically all manufacturers of motor vehicles in the United Kingdom having vehicles which they export to New Zealand assembled in the Dominion,” Air. Hamilton added.
