City-wide martial law was declared and 3800 militiamen were mobilised to end the violence in a tramway strike in which one person was killed and scores were injured to-day.

Long drawn out labour trouble reached *a climax when the police admitted that they were unable to keep the street ears moving. Troops were called in throughout last night and to-day. Until the troops arrived gangs of strikers and sympathisers derailed cars and tore up tramway tracks.

The casualties resulted in battles with the police, who used their batons freely.
