JULIAN CUP SOCCER PLAY THISTLE’S GOOD COMBINATION CONFUSION OVER GROUNDS. Thistle were too good for liawera and won by lour goals to one in a Julian Cup Association football match at New Plymouth on Saturday. They were tjie better team in all departments. The forward line combined well, the halves were good and the hacks were always reliable. The liawera team did not show the same combination and but for Longstulf, Black and Cockcriii, defeat might have been heavier.
During the fust spell there was a good deal of argument among the players. Duo to a misunderstanding there was some confusion over the ground to be used. By the time the misunderstanding was rectified, it was after the scheduled time for the kick-off. the teams haying to play shortened .spells. The teams were :
Thistle.—J- Rae, L. Henderson, Crawford. Scott, J. Thomson. Gillies, J. Col ling wood. L*. Collingwoud. McKay, R, Rae, Hill. Hawera.—Lobban, Black, Longstaff, Eraser, Coekerill. Barker. Ogden, Frampton, Fink. Griffin, James. Referee: Mr H. Collingwoud. Thistle kicked off and after a spell of midfield play J. Collingwood gut away, but Ins centre was intercepted by Longstaff who cleared. Hawera attacked, but. Henderson relieved the pressure. At the other end 1 hunison centred beautifully, but Fraser beat O. Collingwoud for the ball and cleared. Thistle had the best of play for a while and during another attack McKay’s shot was a yard wide. A little later Lobban conceded a corner, but this yielded no advantage. Longstaff clearing. Another spell of midfield play and then J. Collingwood centred. Hill had a. shot but Black cleared. Hawera met with a stubborn defence and then McKay got a kick nicely away and when well down field passed out to llill. The latter beat Black and then centred lo McKay who •scored from close range. Hawera tried hard to equalise without success. The Collingwoods were responsible lor some bright play, but the Hawera backs cleared. James and Griffin raced away together but the latter’s shot was wide. Henderson cleared another attack. Thistle amid protestations were awarded a penalty and a number of Hawera players urged the goalie to. leave the goal. Hill deliberately kicked the ball outside. Later 'Thistle were awarded a free kick from which Hill scored, Lobban making no attempt to save under the mistaken impression that a goal could not be scored direct fiom a free kick. Thistle kept play in another territory anil C. Go!lingwood scored their third goal in a lovely shot. Hawera were on the attack shortly before the interval but Henderson and Crawford proved particularly safe. - Half-time scores were : :
Thistle 3, Hawera. 0. Thistle, quickly carried play into ilawora’s quarters but Black cleared, while a little later Lobban saved good shuts from McKay and C. Collingwood and Hill hit the upright, tbe ball going outside. Ogden got well away and beating Crawford centred nicely, but Henderson was- too quick for Fink and cleared. Hill and Rae were prominent but the latter’s shot was wide. O'gileu again sailed away and centred but Henderson cleared. Following midfield play, Thomson took the ball well down field and from a scramble in Mawora’s goal mouth McKay scored. Hawera tried hard to score and one attack was partially cleaved, but Frampton and Fink again obtained possession, the latter's shot being cleared by Rae. Fink, Frampton and Ogden were again auspicious but again Rae saved well. 'Thistle then assumed the aggressive and several times the Hawera. goal narrowly escaped. Hawera broke away and, following a tussle in front of Thistle’s goal. James hit the crossbar with a high shot. He secured the ball from the rebound and scored. Hawera tried hard in the closing stages to improve their position, but without further success, the game ending:
Thistle 4, Hawera 1
SIX GOALS TO NIL STRATFORD’S RIO MARGIN. MANAIA ELEVEN DEFEATED. Stratford easily beat Manaia- at Stratford by six goals to nil. The game was not as one-sided as the scores would indicate, but Stratford fielded a superior set of forwards. Rlyth and C. Henderson were outstanding and between them scored all six goals. Henderson was responsible for four of the six. The star of the .Manaia side was D. Williamson, who showed clever footwork'. lie was not backed up properly, however, and could net go very far oil his own. Till’ half line was not as strong as Stratford's the players requiring a little more experience in placing the ball to the advantage of their own forwards. There were very promising attacking movements that would have gone farther had the halves been more experienced at anticipating the enemy's moves. Manaia , tieldcd two good full-backs in J. Williamson and AJoutt, the latter being especially good. With Ct Henderson in the forward line Stratford’s attacks were always dangerous, and- the former full-back and half demonstrated conclusively hi- ability to play anywhere on the held. His control of (die ball was a treat to watch, and lie was deadly within Ik! yards of the goal. Rlyth was well' on form and hacked up the eenlre-ferward consistently, so that with Gibbs ami Rlyth on his left Henderson had always sure support. The halves had not the necessary opposition to display their ability fully, and consequently were not conspicuous apart from steady play. Clarl-c, Jones and .Millar made a good trio in the rearguard and kept the goal intact throughout the game. 'file teams were : Stratford.—H. .Millar; D>. Clark, L. Jones; Clements. X. Sheyney, R. Jackson; Gibbs. Rlyth. C. Henderson, Rar-. ron. .Jones,
