SCREEN FOR DOLLY’S CORNER
YOU WILL FIND THIS USEFUL. Would you like to have a screen for Dolly’s corner? It would make a little private apartment i‘or her and be very useful, particularly when she is asleep. If you ask a carpenter for a panel of thin wood, he will Ret it for you. It need be only about a yard in length, for you do not need a very tall screen. No doubt Brother Bob will make you a standard for your screen at his manual training bench. Then you should begin to collect pictures to be pasted on both sides of your panel. A group of baby pictures will be delightful. The advertising
pages of magazines furnish very attractive subjects. Storypictures of animals will add to the interest of Dolly’s screen. A decorative touch may be given by using pictures of flowers and fruit, possibly as a border.
If. the top of the panel is edged with a strip of gummed paper it will have a neater appearance, and you may arrange tiny motifs along the strip. You will like to know about motifs and if the word is new to you, someone will explain. Perhaps you will be so successful with your screen that you will want to make another, a more ambitious one.
This time, the panel may be painted a midnight blue. On one side, little gilt stars might shine at the top. On the other side, silver stars migiit gleam. And one larger star in the upper left-hand corner might be of crossed two-inch strips of silver gummed ribbon and gold. A five-pointed star with rays is thus suggested. Below the stars a landscape wit!) houses, a church and gardens might be arranged according to your own idea. On the silver-star side of the panel you may like to have a snowscene.
A little later, you will be able to make a rainbow screen. A background of azure, with a blend of white in cloud-effect, would be suitable. You can accomplish this easily by using your water paints. The rainbow should arch from corner to corner. You Will need the help of an older person for the lines of the parallel bands of the are, but you can paint in the colours if you have a picture of a rainbow. Possibly it would be better to use crayons for one side of the screen. Dolly will appreciate her singlepanel screens. The folding type is apt to tip or to fold upon itself if children are busv about it.
SILVER AS DISINFECTANT. Silver is an excellent disinfectant, and can be used to purify swimming pools and drinking water. Plates are coated with silver and placed in the supply pipe, and then a weak electric current is sent through the water to pass the plates. Tiny fragments of' silver known as ions become dissolved in the water and harmful bacteria in the water are destroyed. One pound of silver will purify 500,000 gallons of water.
IN THE TOOL-SHED “Life is so boring,” said the gimlet. “Ii means nothing but hard knocks for me,” said the nail. “f can never make both ends meet,” said the ruler. “But you haven’t as much to go through as I have,” said the saw. “Stop arguing, or I’ll go on strike,” said the hammer firmly. Then awl was silent. WRONG, BUT RIGHT ! If your chum likes to think that he is good at spelling, try him with this jolly trick! Say there is one word in the English language which is very difficult to spell and you know your chum will spell it wrong! And when he says he will try to spell it tell him the word is “wrong!” I Then he will be nicely caught!
