Te Kiri Branch

The To Kiri members of the AV.D.F.U. held their branch meeting in the Awatuna Hall on. Tuesday afternoon. The president (Airs T. J. Coxhead) occupied the chair and there was an attendance of 24 despite adverse weather. Alembers were very pleased to see Airs A\ 7 . P. Hughes back again and she was accorded a hearty welcome and a vote of thanks for her interesting letters, sent regularly during her long holiday in Australia.

The president read remits for the annual conference and it was decided not to send a delegate this year as the branch is sending three girls to the educational week in New Plymouth.

It was decided to hold a tree grafting and pruning demonstration in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union, the arrangements being left, to the president. The roll call, “A home nursing hint,” brought forth many homely remedies on burns, sore throats, taking castor oil and preventing of bloodpoisoning. Entries for the monthly competition were not so numerous, but were all excellent work and showed the various uses to which a sugar bag could be put, including cushions (appliqued and woovworked), hand and peg bags, thermos flask cover, firescreen and a natural-looking elephant, which won the prize for Mrs Kedgley. Five others tied for second place, namely, Alesdames Lind, Boyd (two entries), Cassidy and Coxhcad. Judging w r as by popular vote. Mrs Gorgan, of Riverlea, gave a demonstration on puff pastry making and was accorded a vote of thanks. It was decided to have a plate of tarts for the next competition, Airs Gargan kindly consenting to act as judge. Hostesses at afternoon tea were Alesdames AT. Kcdgley, AV. A. Lind and R. Alty, and a book exchange was contrailed by Airs AL Bourke (vice-presi-dent) .
