PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

ST. JOHN’S INSTITUTE IMPROMPTU SPEECH EVENING At this week's meeting of the St. John’s Presbyterian Church Young People’s Institute impromptu speeches on a. variety of subjects were a feature. Miss M. Lamb, whose subject was “Honesty is the Best Policy,” was declared the winner by the judge, Mr J. Bash. A suggestion, that the institute should incorporate in its programme a contest for prepared Speeches was made by Mr Dash, who gave a talk on the use of talents, giving ah interesting and instructive survey of modern education.

Mr A. MacEae presided and the meeting was opened with prayer, and a Scripture reading by Mr C. Lacey. Several literary contributions -were read. Mrs Christensen, Marton, a former member, thanked the institute for recent good wishes and was elected an absent tuember. It was decided to have at the next meeting a debate, “That Scotland has contributed more to the progress Of the British Empire than England.” The affirmative will be taken by Miss J. Johnston and Messrs R. Lloyd and E. Sargent and the negative by Misses .t. Whiteloek and A. Watts and Mr S. Bownes.
