CRIPPLED CHILDREN’S FUND
NUFFIELD TRUST SOCIETY. WELLINGTON BRANCH FORMED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.' WELLINGTON, June 14. The formation of a Wellington branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was endorsed at a public meeting in the town hall tonight. The Mayor, Mr T. O. A. Risiop, presided. “There seems to be a little mystery in the minds of some people about wSat Lord Nuffield’s intentions were and just how the £60,000 which I had the honour to receive from him is going to be spent, 5 ’ said Mr C. J. B. Norwood, a member of the Nuffield Trust. “The first gift made by Lord Nuffield was for £50,000, and, beyond a general understanding that it was to be used for crippled children’s work throughout the Dominion, there was no stipulation by him as to the way he wished it to be spent. Later, before he left, he provided a second gift of £IO,OOO, which was to be the nucleus of an endowment fund which he hoped would be supplemented by the New Zealand people. “I am sorry to say that on the whole the response from the wealthier people of the Dominion was very disappointing,” continued Mr Norwood. “Certain sums, however, have been ’subscribed, but the totals have not come, to hand, and therefore, T cannot bell you the exact result.” Air Norwood said the trust had decided that the whole of the money available to the central fund should oe treated as a. national endowment fund, the returns from the investment of which would be available to help all crippled children’s societies now being formed through the agency of Rotary Clubs throughout New Zealand.
