LAWSON LITTLE
IN BOBBY JONES' STEPS. SECOND WIN OF GOLF TITLE. Lawson Little, first American to win the British amateur golf championship twice (and the fourth player from U.S.A. to hold the title since it was first contested in 189-5), completed his twenty-fifth year during the championship—last month. This victory, following his “double” in the British and American amateur classics in, 1934, makes him the outstanding amateur since Bobby Jones nnofliciallv lost bis amateur status.
Although Little won the title well, he had several narrow escapes before the deciding game, and in t.ho final lie met strong eppositon from the 1927 holder. Dr. William Tweddell. Much of the interest of the event passed out when in the first round Jack Mc Lean, t}ie only Britisher who, on form, appeared to be able to “stop” Little, failed before a relatively unknown golfer. Before the setting of dates for the British and American open championships, Dawson Little stated that he would compete in the British event this year. But the American event will be played at. Pittsburgh from July 6 to 8, while the British open is sot for Muirfipld, beginning July 21. It would not seem likely that he would miss bis own championship, and it seems less likely that lie would have the. time to make the double crossing of the Atlantic. The failure of Jack McLean is not taken as significant. Such speotaoujlar failures sometimes come to all golf- ; ers, and McLean on the form lie showed in Australia, is likely to bo a power in the biggest event of t.ho year, that at Muirfield. Watching him in action in Australia, some of the American professionals expressed the opinion that lie had in him golf good enough to win the British open.
