BIRTHDAYS

Matapu Celebrations On Tuesday at their home, “Birkenhead,” Matapu, Mr and Mrs AV. T. Seed gave a combined birthday party in honour of their daughter, Miss Bessie Seed’s coming-of-age, and also Mr G. Hurrell, sen., who celebrated his Bflt.h birthday on Sunday. Grey and pink streamers hung from Hie ceiling of the dance room, while the walls were decorated with ferns and pink chrysanthemums. Cards, taking the form of a progressive euchre party, were held in the sitting-room. Mrs Seed received her guests in a frock of royal blue corded silk marocaifl, with heige trimmings and black coatee. Miss Seed wore a grey corded crepe trimmed with pink velvet. Games and dancing were the order of the evening,

and duets were contributed by Misses O. and E'. Thomas, songs by Miss ii. Clements (Hamilton) recitation by Miss G. Clements. Prizes for the euchre competition were won by Mrs E. Sharp and Mr K. Sharp, and a travelling prize went to Mrs D. Kidner and Mr AY. J. Blair. During the'evening a parcel game was played, the contents of which, consisted of a gold key, to be handed to the guest of the evening. At the conclusion of a dainty supper two cakes were placed on the table, one with 21 kewpies and the other with 80 candles, the gift of Mr and Mrs E. Sharp, of Te Roti. The 83 candles were lit by Mr Hurrell and the electric lights switched off to show their glow. Mrs Seed proposed the health of her father (Mr Hurrell) and also wished him many happy returns of his birthday. Mr Hurrell suitably responded and thanked everyone for their good wishes. Mr O. Startup proposed the health

of Miss Seed and wished her manyhappy returns of the day. Miss Seed suitably responded and thanked everyone for the presents received. The health of the host and hostess was honoured and Mr Seed replied, thanking the geusts for their good wishes and also for attending in such numbers. A community sing went merrily until the singing of “Anld Lang Syne” brought the evening to a close.
