SCHOOL JUBILEE
(To the Elditor.) Sir;-—ln view of the interest at present exercising the public mind in connection with celebrating the silver jubilee of His Majesty the King, it may be of interest to your readers to know that this important national event will coincide with. the diamond jubilee of the Hawera Main School, which was officially opened on May 13, 1875 by the then chairman of the school committee, Mr Thos. Middlemas, with a roll number of 29 hoys and 19 girls under Mr E.. J. Dunne as headmaster, when, I believe, the first pupil to enter the new school was Mr A. V. Messana (Alf. Tait) now of Kaponga. The school was then under the control of the Patea Education Board, with Mr Sherwood as chairman and Mr Wm. Cowern was secretary. I am, etc. J.W.H. Hawera, March 30, 1935.
