Air Jacob Ruppert, one of the principal backers of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, after a discussion of conditions with - Commandpr Gjertson at New York, has sent a wireless message to Admiral Byrd urging him to abandon the plan to occupy the advance post through the winter night. The message was: “I am very much worried about your personal safety and earnestly urge your return to the base.” The first question AD Ruppert. asked Commander Gjertson was, “Why is Admiral Byrd going down there all by himself ?” Commander Gjertson responded: “I don’t know, but the but would have been a tight fit for two men!” He also explained that it had been the original plan to have two men to undertake the observations, but tie delay caused by difficulties in landing supplies had made this impossible.
