MOUNTAIN RECORD CLAIMED
STRATFORD TO TOP AND BACK. FAST TIME OF 3HR-S. 15MIN. What is claimed as a record ascent of Mt. Egmont was made yesterday, when Mr A. S'. Will an, of Lowgarth, travelled from the Stratford Post Office to the summit and back in 3hrs 15min. Mr Will an left the Stratford Post Offive at 10.45 a.m. and motored to the plateau. He reached the summit at 12.47 • m. His leaving time wais recorded by Miss A. Kirkwood, Stratford. and lie had the paper signed oil the summit bv Messrs A. H. Nelson, H. B. Wollett, S. Ward and E. R. Ross. He then commenced his return journey and reached the post office, at 2 p.m. He climbed in light attire and carried no gear.. Visibility was good and conditions for climbing excellent. On Saturday Miss D. Fernie. a New Zealander, made the ascent to the summit and return from the North Eg niont Hostel, in three how#. Accompanied by a guide. Miisis Fernie ieft the hostel about 9 o’clock and was back shortly after noon. She has had a fair amount of experience of alpine climbing in Switzerland, where she climbed the Alps. The guide said on his return that he had some difficulty in keepin- up with Miss Fernie, who set a fast pace.
