RELIEF CARNIVAL EFFORT

SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERT.

WANGANUI GARRISON BAND

The Hawera Opera. House was filled to overflowing la.st night, when a lemarkaibly fine programme was given by the* 'Wanganui Garrison Band,which visited Hawera specially to help the cause of relief for unemployment. Under the direction of the conductor, Mr W. H. Toughey, the hand maintained the high standard always' associated with its work and_ was given a very enthusiastic reception. The hand’s numbers were as follow: Hymn, “Nearer, My God, to Thee”; overture, “Morning Noon and Night” ; pot pourri, “Medodian Melodies”; intermezzo, “In a Chinese Temple Garden”; marches, “Roll Away, Bet” and “Australasian.” A euphonium solo was given by Mr Owen Williams, three years successively Dominion champion. In addition songs were contributed by Mrs- W. Snowsill, “Damon”; Mr T. Kendall (Wanganui), “The Gay Highway” and “Asleep in the Deep” ; and sketches by Mr G. Hardenlberg, who was twice recalled. A novel item added was a bagpipe trio “Magersfontein,” by Pipers lan Campbell, Bain and Nairn. The accompanist wa,.s Mrs Kendall, of Wanganui. At the conclusion Mr R. S. Allwright, who acted as stage manager, thanked the band most heartily for its ready assistance, adding that as soon a« the band was asked an immediate reply in the affirmative was given, He referred to the great musical and contest record of the band and said it was a pleasure to Hawerapeople to have the privilege of hearing it. The concert was ara-rnged on behalf of the Movie Queen candidate in the Hawera district carnival, but the committee did not care which secured the extra- votes so long as the cause got assistance. He also thanked the local performers for their help. The members of the company were afterwards entertained at supper by a ladies’ committee, and appreciation of the hospitality shown was, acknowledged by the drum-major and secretary, Mr El. Comrie, who assured the Hawera people that the band was always ready to help a good cause. Mr J. it. Nairn, of the Hawera Pipe Band, in acknowledging appreciation of the vote of thanks, said the pipers were pleased to help at all times.

Mr H. C. A. Fox, conductor of the Hawera Municipal Band, said lie liad thoroughly enjoyed the music of the visitors and hoped to have the opportunity of paying a return visit so as to increase the brotherly spirit that should always exist among hands. He added that his hand should have entertained the visitors hut for a misunderstanding, and he apologised to them for the occurrence. The band left immediately after the concert on the return journey. APPEAL TO THE CHURCHES.

At the request of the Mayor (Mr J. E. Campbell) an appeal to the people of the churches in Hawera wa,s made from the various pulpits yesterday. It was requested that everyone should give at least one article to he sold at the grand bazaar to he held from March 21 to 24, and that these would be received at the Presbyterian Hall on March 19 by Miss Young and used for a stall at the bazaar.

SOCIAL AND SPORTS EVENTS BUSY WEEK AHEAD.

Eight days remain to the opening of the mystery bazaar which terminates the Hawera unemployed relief of dietress carnival, and in the meantime South Taranaki residents have a jolly round of social and sports events in which to advance further the candidature of the respective queens in the present Oueen of the Carnival contest. MOVIE DANCE TO-NIGHT. Aup t her of the series of popular dances in aid of the movie qncen will be hold in the Winter Show Buildings this (Monday) evening at 8 o’clock, and with the previous success of these functions as a standard for attainment it is exoected that there, will be- a record crowd of patrons. Prizes .are offered for trie best and most original fancy dresses worn and supper will be provided. Wills’ Melodymakers Orchestra. lias arranged a special programme of music and the same popular prices of admission will obtain. GARDEN PARTY.

Originality is the keynote of a garden party to be held to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon at the Egmont Racing CTub’s grounds on Wailii Road in aid of the Country Queen. Of special interest wilt be tlio •‘weight! for ago stakes,” which should create much amusement u.s well as a (probable) ‘‘profitable” return to investors. Tho “tote” opens at one o’clock and to safeguard the interest of tho campaign no “brjokies” will lie allowed on .the course. Numerous other competitive events will he run and for the less athletic patrons there will be a, number of competitions of a more or less diverting nature, such as nail driving and potato peeling. A “bring and buy” stall will contain a vast array of saleable goods from country supporters and ice cream mav be obtained. Flag “50(1” will lie played in the kiosk, and afternoon tea. will he procurable. During the afternoon the well-known and nopt'lnr Maori string orchestra, will he in attendance, and render a programme of music to further enliven tho proceedings. COMMUNITY SING.

The last of the series of community sings held under the auspices of the movie queen committee, will take place

in the Grand Theatre to-morrow (Tuesday) evening. A supporting programme of new items and new artists has been arranged and everything points to a successful entertainment. The limerick competition again will be a feature of the evening’s entertainment, and already entries .are coniine forward. Entries close at Miss Blake’s confectionary co-morrow (Tuesday) at noon, and intending competitors should see that their entries are handed in in good, time. MAORI PAGEANT. Unusual interest in this district surrounds the appearance at the Hawera Opera. House on Wednesday next (March 14) of Miss Miriama Heketa, styled affectionately by her Wellington admirers as “Pavlova of the South Seas,” in a spectacular dance creation. Miss Heketa, one of the most graceful and accomplished danseuses to be found in the Dominion and holder of a Wellington championship four years in succession, is coming to Hawera to assist in the Maori pageant produced by Mr Scotty Panenni in aid of the Country and Movie queens. The champion noi dance team of Waitangi will assemble at Ta'iiporohenui this evening for a special rehearsal and the members, including visitors from Pareroa (Patea) Pa, will remain in residence until the evening of the public performance at the o(pera House. The box plan is now open. ANTIQUE EXHIBITION

Two days remain in which to view the exhibition of anti ones arranged at the Winter Show Buildings in aid of the. Movie Queen. This is an extension of the season previously decided upon and the committee’s action ha.s been justified by reason of the excellent public support accorded at to-day’s session. The exhibition closes finally at ID p.m. on Wednesday. GALA. DAY FESTIVITIES The carnival next week will be introduced with a spectacular out-door gala at King Edward Park on Wednesday (March 21) from one o’clock onwards. Proceedings will open with a procession. through the town to the Park gates followed by a mystery race and a mock court. A nominal charge will be made for admission to the grounds, where there will be arranged tents for side-shows and stalls. In the centre of i lie*, green there will be presented displays of massed drill, gymnastics, tugs-of-war for the South Taranaki Primary Schools’ championship, folk dancing, etc. A tennis tournament, open to all-comers, will be held on the Park club’s lawn's, and putting and croquet competitions on the Park Croquet Club’s lawns.
