HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL

COMBINED ANNUAL SPORTS FINAL EVENTS DECIDED. WINNERS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS. The ILaivera Technical High School boys and girls’ combined annual sports were concluded in fine weather at the Egmont A. and P. showgrounds m Ha'wera yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents and friends, and interest in the proceedings was fully maintained as each event followed the other with almost clocklike precision. Altogether 88 championship and handicap events, the majority having from three to six heats and semi-finals, were decided. The general arrangements for the sports were most efficiently organised and not a hitch occurred, the very lengthy' programme being dispatched in just under six hours. In previous years the boys and girls have held separate sports meetings, but on this occasion the two were combined and held as one with equally satisfactory results. The spectators witnessed many close contests during the day, and the efforts of the pupils to create new' records in times and distances . were heartily applauded. The condition of the track in the morning and a brisk north-w’esterly breeze militated against fast times being recorded over the longer distances, hut in the afternoon hotter performances resulted. The most notew'orthy was that of R. Chisnall, winner of the boys’ junior chamnionship, w'ho clipped l-ssec off L. Soragg’s 1930 record of 19 4-ssec m the 120 vards junior hurdles and also 3-ssec off the same hoy’s 1931 record of 2min 41 3-osec in the 880 yards junior championsip. diisnall proved himself an all-round athlete and attacked another of L. Spragg’s records, that of 71sec in the 440 yards junior championship, which he equalled 1 . The only record to be approached, in the orirls’ events was the 100 yards junior championshii). the time for winch (13sec. established by E. Toy) being equalled bv N. Smith.
