BILLS FROM LOWER HOUSE. FIRST READINGS PASSED. WELLINGTON Oct. 18. The Hon. R. McCalluni in the Legislative Council to-ciay gave notice to introduce the Land Agents Amendment Bill. The Nurses and Widwives’ Registration Bill the National Art Gallery and Dominion Muiseum /Amendment Bill, the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment Bill, the 1 Marriage Amendment Bill, the Judicature Amendment Bill and the Arbitration Clauses (Protocol) and Arbitration (Foreign Awards) Bill were received from the House of Representatives and read a first time The council rose at 2.55 p.m. until to-morrow. -’ HIRING OF TAXIS. SAFEGUARDS TO AWARDS. WELLINGTON Oct. IS. Introducing the Motor Cabs Bill in the House of Representatives to-day Mr Mason (Lab., Auckland Suburbs) said it was designed to prevent certain taxi-cab companies from evading the law of master and servant. He said some companies ‘were in the* practice of making arangement for hiring a taxi-cab to the driver instead of an ordinary contract for employment. The result was bo enable companies to evade"the ordinary obligations of employers as to Arbitration Court awards, workers’ compensation for accidents and liability to third parties for the negligence of the driver. After a number of membe/rs had spoken in support of the Bill the Rt Hon. G. W. Forbes said he was sympathetic with its object. He though it might be possible to deal with the matter under the Municipal Corporations Bill which would be before the House at a later stage of the session. It was also possible that tbe Minister of Transport would able to deal with the matter bv tbe issue of regulations. The Pill was read a first time.
