WANGANUI FORM
SECOND DAY PERFORMANCES
COMMENT BY “LIMITED.”
! On the second day of the Wanganui races Knollmere again made light work of his task in the hurdle race, jumping better than on the first day and winning easily. Knollmere looks like reaching top, class as a hurdler. ' In the Debutante Stakes the Mew Plymouth-trained Superior won very attractively. The favourite, Pin Money, had every chance, but Superior had too much pace for him. Gay Blonde was not well served at the jump our or she might have been second. The three placed horses outstanding. The Hawera mare St. Clara ran a great race in the Trial Plate. Plaide, who started a hot favourite,- had to be ridden right out to win narrowly, St. Clara promises to be useful this season, as she has shown steady improvement. . „ j c The Wanganui Guineas, the first of the season’s classic tliree-year-olct races, showed Red Manfred up in. a very favourable light, as ho won very decisively and lie will be a decided favourite for the Derbies run later on. Spiral, by Limond from the Spearniint mare Diax, was outstanding of the others. , / ; The. Nigger Minstrel—-Cinnamon (-eldnig Fiji brought off a big surpiise ill the Higgie Handicap and bis form thqs early will draw attention to his New Zealand Cup prospects in November As a three-year-old Fiji ran second and third in his Derby engagements, so he ishoujld prove lnmselx capable of running out the cup distance. , , . ~ . Plateau who was bred by Mr A. Appleyard, of Hawera, and is a full relative to a good performer m Crown Area, won the distance hack race in good style mid now that lie lias stiuc-v form other successes can be expecteu of him. „ , ,_r In the sprint race Royal Hunting and The Tiger were early out by themselves. The Tiger faded after entering the straight and Midmette appeared to have the race won w hen her stablemate flashed up to beat .her by half a head with Royal Hunting a' neck away. Slippery was fourth fust in front of The Tiger. lii the final event there was spirited betting. Acceptable and Haulbowlme were quickest out and were soon clear of Boon, Quietly and Tavern Knight. No Doubt was badly left at the stait and was never in the hunt. At two _ furlongs Haulbovline was in front from Acceptable, Boon and Quietly, and led into the straight to hang on to wm bv half a length with only heads between the next four or five-Boon Acceptable, Stadium, Tavern Knight and Diagano. Diagano was the favourite in the straight-out machine and might have been better served over another furlong.
