The death occurred at the Hawera Hospital this afternoon of Mr Frederick Livingston, of Ramie Road, Inaha. Relief work for this week was allocated to 146 Hawera registered unemployed—seven A class men. 97 B and 42 C class men—compared with 149 last week. For the week ended September 16 a total of 132 men were assisted and the previous week 146 men were given work.

Dominion Day (September 25) was observed as a bank holiday in Hawera to-day. The New Zealand Ensign was flown at the Post Office clock tower.

Advice has been received From Wellington that at the practical examinations just concluded there by the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music, Miss Doris Gatenby, Mangatoki, has been successful in obtaining the L.A.B. performers’ diploma. Miss Gatenby is a pupil of Mrs C. A. Elennerhassett, Eltham.

The co-operation of service officers from the Taranaki. Wanganui and Palmerston North automobile associations provided motorists attending the Wanganui races with an unusual service on Saturday, the whole of the route from Palmerston North to New Plymouth being patrolled to give assistance if required. The service was greatly appreciated by a number ol motorists to whom roadside help was given, as well as bv many whose cars were attended to on the course.

Central heating by gas operated appliances will be the subject of a free lecture at the Carlton tearooms in Hawera this evening at 8 o’clock. The lecturer (Mr Andrew), who comes from Wellington, has had considerable experience both in Now Zealand and ir America of•the modem methods ol central heating and air conditioning and an important point which, will be explained is the remarkable low cost of the modern system as applied in whops and offices) iarud also in the home. The old-fashioned gas heating appliances have been completely levo lutionised and the new devices j>er fected will be explained. The lecture has been arranged 1(V the Hawera Gas Company, Ltd., and the public is cordially invited to attend.
