MANUTAHI

ATTRACTIVE CONCERT PROGRAMME

WHAKAMARA VISITORS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Thanks to the co-operation of a party of Whakamara, residents the Manutahi Hall committee was able to present a. very enjoyable concert on Wednesday evening. In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was a very fair attendance.

The feature of the programme was a one-act play entitled “Eldorado,” played by the members' of the AVhakamara Dramatic Club. The scenery, which depicted the interior of an old windmill, was admirably arranged. The cast was as follows: Old Miser Watson, Air J. Christie; Henry (his son), Air N. Barkla; Betsy (liis daughter), Miss Gulliver-; Widow Burrows, Mrs Gulliver. The play was produced by Mr C. J. Williams. Items were rendered by local residents as follow: Songs, Miss Eileen Harvie; violin solo, Airs A. Thomson; humorous item, Air D. AI. Jillett; songs, Aliss M. O’Sullivan. The latter portion of the programme was devoted to a debate between teams representing the Whakamara and Alanutahi districts. The subject was “That country life is preferable to town life.” All - D. Al. Jillett opened for the affirmative and was supported by Alessrs 11. O'. Schwass, A. Thomson and G. Barclay. Air J. Christie opened for the negative for Whakamara and was supported by Messrs le Fleming, Davies and Smith. At the conclusion of the debate the chairman, Air J. Couch, declared the Manutahi team the winners on the show of hands. Supper was provided by the local ladies and afterwards Airs Gulliver and Aliss O’Sullivan provided music for dancing. The proceeds were in aid of the hall funds. At the conclusion of the concert programme Air C. Barclay, as chairman of the hall committee, thanked the visitors for their assistance, which had been given at no small inconvenience. He also congratulated Whakamara on the general excellence of the production. GENERAL. The docking of lambs lias been completed by many fanners in the district and some very good percentages are reported. One local farmer reports having over sixty ewes with either twins or triplets in one paddock. The long .spell of dry weather was broken on Tuesday, when steady rain set in. The downfall will be especially beneficial, as a good deal of topdressing had been carried out during the fine weather. . The excitement of the children during the presentation of the play on Wednesday was reminiscent of a matinee at the silent pictures. The ultimate downfall of the “villain” was loudly acclaimed. No doubt the children’s enjoyment was due to the fact that, for many of them, it was their first experience of a “flesh and blood” show. The interest created in cricket last season, when many friendly matches were played with nearby districts, will probably result in a cricket club being formed. A meeting is to be called at an early date. PERSONAL.

Mrs G. Scown is at present visiting Mrs H. Dickson, Ohangai. Miss E. M. S. Tapp, who was assistant at the school last year, has been appointed assistant at the Te Reinga Native School in the AVairoa district. Air M. P. Comerford, who has been residing on the AYest Coast since leaving Manutahi last year, has been confined to his bed for some time on account of an accident to liis knee. Mr and Mrs C. Barclay have returned from a short visit to Levin. Nurse Grey, of the school medical staff, and Mr Pargeter, inspector of health for the AA’anganui district, visited the school on Friday last. Airs O. Barclay is at present in Hawera.
