FUNERAL AT OTAKEHO

There has rarely been a larger or more representative gathering at a funeral in Otakeho than was present at tho interment of tiie late Airs A. C. Johnstone, oi

Auroa, which took place yesterday afternoon. It was in every wav a most impressive ceremony and proved ruliy the high, regard in which she was held in the district. Relatives and friends from New Plymouth and Lepperton and from every part of the province down to Patea were present. At 1.45 p.m a. short service- was lieitl oy the Rev. C. W. Solomon, vicar of Manaia, in the Otakeho Church, when he read the psalm and lesson and prayers set for the funeral service and the hymn “Rock of Ages,” Airs Johnstone's favourite, was sung, Mrs Cook presiding at the organ. The cortege then set out on foot for the cemcten , the hearers carrying the coffin along the road and across the field to the burial ground. Friends followed hearing a large number of wreaths. The bearers were Messrs J. C. Duff, H. Hartley. M. Langlands jnr. (sons-in-iaw) .Alex Fraser, E. Scott and W. Bradford. The vicar then read the remaining portion of the burial service and the Benediction concluded the ceremony. AYreaths were sent by the following organisations and firms, in addition to the large number from individual friends: Joll Company’s main factory and Palmer Road and othei branches, Auroa branch of the W.D.F.U.. Auroa Bowling Club, Anjiean Ladies’ Guild, United Sunday School (teachers and scholars), Messrs Lovell and AVhite and Messrs Hodder and Tolley, National Dairy Association and Ilawera, Trotting Club. AN AUROA APPRECIATION.

Tho late Mrs A. C. Johnstone was an old pioneer who was held'' in the highest respect and affection throughout North and South Taranaki v.writes our A.uroa correspondent). The late Mrs Johnstone was a devoted adherent and worker for the Anglican Church and did a tremendous Jot of work for orphanages and general welfare in all social spheres. For many yeans in Auroa the late Mrs Johnstone conducted a large sowing class, teaching the young people needlework and sending away large parcels of cloth.ng to the needy. A sorrowing husband and three daughters, Mesdames I. C. Huff, H. Hartley and M. La ligands, are left to mourn tljeir loss. There were two sons, Reg., who paid th‘e supremo sacrifice in the Great War, and Andrew, who died at Auioa. The sympathy of the whole province goes out to ill- Johnstone and family in their bereavement.
