BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

TARANAKI TITLES CONTESTED MATCHES HELD AT HAWERA. TEAM FOR N.Z. TOURNAMENT

, Willi the exception of one or two outstanding bouts the standard of boxing at the Taranaki amateur championships held in the gymnasium hall, Hawera, last evening did not reach the heights anticipated, and on the whole the form shown was below that expected of title contestants. The inability of several entrants to make the weight in their respective classes and the non-appearance of a. number nominated reduced the number of bouts to seven, and two titles, the bantamweight and light-heavyweiglit, were won without opposition. The tournament was capably controlled by the Hawera Association and there was a very large attendance of spectators. The referee was Mr Allan Maxwell and the judges Messrs EL T. Simon (Hawera) and R. Hadclow (Patea). The various titles were won as follow

Flyweight.—Y. Gordon (Patea). Bantamweight.—T. Loveridge (jNew Plymouth), unopposed. Featherweight.—J. Jarvis (Hawera). Lightweight.—G Thomas (Hawera). Welterweight. —F. Hutchens (Eltliam).

Middleweight.—F. Hutchens. Light heavy weight.—F. Roguski (Patea), unopposed. C. Gordon (Patea), New Zealand bantam champion, was unable to compete owing to an injured hand. At a subsequent meeting of the selection committee the following team was chosen to represent Taranaki at the New Zealand championships:— V. Gordon, flyweight. C. Gordon, bantamweight. J. Jarvis, featherweight. ,G. Thomas, lightweight. F. Hutchens, welterweight. F. Roguski (Patea), middleweight and light heavyweight. T. Loveridge may also bo included il finances permit. Mr L. R. Davies. Alton, was appointed manager of the team. At the conclusion of the tournament the Mayor of Hawera, Mr J. EL Campbell, presented title certificates to the winners, and congratulated them upon their success. He referred to the excellent sporting spirit shown by the contestants and called for cheers for the losers.

In the following details of results the associations by whom the contestants were nominated arc shown in parentheses:—

ELY WEIGHT. Not exceeding S stone. Final. —-V. Gordon (Patea), 8.0, beat T. Loveridge (New Plymouth), 8.0. The pair opened at a torrid pace and stood toe to toe in sparkling exchanges. Loveridge was the aggressor and scored freely with 'both hands to the body, but Gordon was the cooler and punched crisply and accurately, seldom wasting a blow. A rapier-like left repeatedly found Loveridge’® face and it was invariably followed up by a stinging right. The pace told on the pair hi the second round and both were the worse for wear. In the filial session both traded heavy lefts and rights to the face, with Gordon also connecting with a hard right rip to- the body. FEATHERWEIGHT. Not exceeding 9 stone. Final.—J. Jarvis (Hawera), 9.0, beat B. Turner (New Plymouth), 8.12. Both opened very cautiously, Turner then wading in to swing both hands to the body. Jarvis landed with two solid left rips to the body that halted Turncr’s rush tactics, and standing off he boxed coolly and confidently to score with clean straight punches. Turner made the most of in-fighting, in which he showed to advantage. Jarvis demonstrated a very effective guard and liis timing was seldom astray. P. Huzziff (New Plymouth) and G. Thomas (Hawera) failed to make the weight. LIGHTWEIGHT. Not exceeding 9st. 91b. Semi-final.—P. Hjuzziff (New Plymouth), 9.2, beat T. Parkin (New Plymouth), 9.9. A good straight left was a consistent points- earner -for Parkin, but Huzzilf carried an effective punch in each hand and made the grace to suit himself. As the aggressor ho showed to advantage m the second round and Parkin lost his advantage in long range tactics. Parkin went.out to make up ai points leeway in the final .session, but Huzziff met him on terms and rattled him with a barrage of rights and lefts to the head. Parkin staged a sparkling recovery to again exploit his left and in turn he .shook Huzziff with a succession of solid rights to the head. Both were down for bare counts, and in a solid mill in the final minute Huzziff lasted the better to' take a close decision.

Final.—-G. Thomas (Halwera), 9.4, beat Huzziff on a teeth nit-ail knock-out. • Boxing more confidently than lie did in his earlier bout, Huzziff kept ThomWs off to score at long range. Thomas was missing badly with ill-timed swings but on occasions he landed to the body with it hard right. Thomas showed a marked improvement in the second round and a. right swing repeatedly found its mark to the head. A vicious right to the jaw dropped Huzziff for seven and Thomas gave him no chance to recover. TLuzziff gamely weathered a. succession of hard rights, but twice went down for counts. The third round was in progress a bare half minute when Huzziff was sent to the canvas with another right swing, the referee stopping the bout and declaring Thomas t)he winner on a technical knock-out. WELTERWEIGHT. Not exceeding LOst. 71b. Final. —F. Hutchens (Kllthumb 10.5, beat W. Hudson (Hawera), 10.7. Wading in with both hands Hutchens connected solidly to the body and crowded Hudson, scoring freely at close quarterns. His. aggressive tactics bustled Hudson, but the hitter evened no with straight punches to the lace. Hutchens continued to force the pace in the second round and Hudson absorbed solid punishment as Hutchens connected to the head and body with left and right swings. Hutchens made every endeavour in the third round to finish the 'bout by the short route, hut although Hudson was in poor shape he quite successfully weathered the round. T. Parkin withdrew. MIDDLEWEIGHT. Not exceeding list. 61b. Semi-final.—L. S. Pepper ill (New Plymouth) 11.6, beat K. Reid (Fitham) 10>2.

The bout was a very ragged exhibi-

tion, neither showing any semblance of championship form. In tlie final Pepperill withdrew, leaving F. Hutchens (ELtham), 10.5, to meet F. Ro-gu.ski (Patea), 11.5. Final.—Hutchens -beat Roguski.

Hutchens was down for iseven with a hard right to the jaw in the first minute of the round, Roguski seeking a decisive punch from the gong. Straight lefts momentarily halted Roguski, but he again connected with effect with, a demonstrating right. Roguski received a. warning from the referee for hitting Hutchens a-s the latter was on the canvas. Hutchens rallied in . the second round to show to better advantage in close and with a straight left poked Rloguski’s face time and again. Roguski was istiil manoeuvring for a knock-out, but again was wanned for holding. Both hold and wrestled in a very ragged exhibition, with Hutchens holding the advantage in close. He wisely chose not to attempt to mix matters with Roguski, who would not open out effectively except at- long range. The decision in Hutchen’.s favour was a. popular one with the crowd. In a non-00-mpetition match H. Kettles (Waitara), 8.9, beat A. Jen-sen (Midhirst), 8.9. In a pa.perweight exhibition D. Gordon. 5.2, beat J. Riley, 5.2. An exhibition bout was also given by Tommy Donovan and -G. Thomas. To assist in sending the Taranaki team to the New Zealand championships the Hawera Football Gymnasium Committee donated the charge for the hire of the hall to the association’s funds.
