SUBSTITUTE, FOR SHILLINGS. CONVICTION OF WOMAN. (Bv Pren** 4*«up.liit*on.l WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. As the result of inserting halfpennies into a gas meter instead of shillings a yoning woman was charged with stealing gas. The offence took place at Wanganui. The meter was read after she left, and when she was located she said she had used halfpennies because she was short of cash at the time. She Intended to pay' the money owing. The magistrate said that am view. of the probation officer’s report, in which it was stated that the woman was ifi very poor circumstances, lie ‘would 1 admit her to probation for 12 months and order restitution. The name was suppressed.
