The Hawera Star.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1933. EGMONT A. & P. GROUNDS.

Delivered every evening tiy S o’clock in Hawera, Manaia. Kaupokonui, Otakeho, Oeo, Pihama. Opunake, .Vormanby, Okaiawa, Eltnam, Ngaere. Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Te Kiri, Mahoe. Lowgarth, Manutahi. Kakaramea. Alton. Hurleyville, Patea. Wbenuakura. Waverley, Mokola„ Whakamara, Ohangai, Meremerri. Fraser Rond and Ararata. j

It WflfS announced at yesterday's meeting of the committee of the Egmo.nt A. amd P. Association that the holder of the £IO,OOO mortgage over the Association’s land had offered to reduce the liability by as much as 50 per cent, uinder certain conditions. This alnnoun'eemeai't is of the greatest interest, to the townspeople of Hawera, as well as to, the rural community o.f South Taranaki. Fo,r several years the future of the Association's grounds has been' a | cause for anxiety and on several occasions schemes have been propounded with the object of securing it far the Association and the public. The thought of losing the grounds is most unwelcome to the people of the town as well as to ithe Association members, but the danger of such an unhappy occurrence has been very real. The liability is a very big one amd the meeting of the interest commitment has caused grave difficulty in the pnst. The prospect has been made considerably brighter, however, by .the mortgagee’s j offer to reduce the principal, subje,c!t to £ for, £ donations being received from the public. Prom the terms of the offer if can be gathered that the minimum amount re-I quired from the public is £2OOO and the, maximum amount of principal reduction that will be conceded is £SOOO, provided the public contributes an equal sum. Though the Association has been given a difficult hurdle ,to negotiate it has, in Common with the public, been offered a method of effecting its own salvation. It is obvious that the mOSt happy Tesult for everybody would be the attainment of the goal of £SOOO raised by donation's. Whether this goal is possible of attainment .remains for the A. and P. Association, by its energy, to prove. Already there has beefn a very good response to ami appeal for donations which has been quietly in progress during the last few months, a very substantial sum 1 , made up of large clontadons, having been promised. If a sufficient number of donors respond to make this .scheme effective, they will place the whole o.f the people of South Taranaki, and of Hawera particularly, under a deep debt of gratitude to them for all time. The value of the grounds lies not only .in the accommodation they provide for show days', football matches and other spectacular (Occasions, but also in the fact that they provide a ‘ ‘breathing space” which is availed of almo;st | 'daily by people, young and old, who use it as a rCtreat from the cramping conditions of town life.
