HOME SCIENCE LECTURES
MISS MACMILLAN’S ACTIVITIES PROGRESS OF SOUTH TARANAKI GROUPS. Miss Violet MacMillan, who is conducting a course of lectures for home science study, groups, in South Taranaki, submits the following report on her activities for the last week:— “During the past welch mV itinerary has token me to- new areas—the western paint of South Taranaki. Monday aifter.noo,n ait Iva.iawa was spent to giving (the dresisfo.rm demonstration to members of the W.D.F.U. at the homo df Ith'ei'r president, Mrs Donald Cameron, but .the open, meeting in the evening at ’Munaia was abandoned owing to insufficient alt tendance. “Next day the dressform de.nio<n«t'ration wais given at Itbcyhome of Mrs Walters, m'v hostess in Malnaia, two forms being made, aitrd, having the evenii.ng free, I was happcy ho, bo able to attend the opening night of the Drama Festival Contest at Hawera. So far the week had be'on an easy one, but now real work bogaln, and after an eairly start from Mrs Simpson’s, by 9.30 I was taking a dressmaking studygroup at Otakeho ait Mrs McDonald’s. The “pattern” subject was studied and the cia'ss sopn settled down to hard work. , . _ , “The Auroa, W.D.F.U. had invited members of the surrounding branches to attend their open meeting that afternwn. With, much iirniprovisci't ion &{iiu hadty borrowing of equipment the lecture and demonstration on * ‘ Goitre an,d Anaemia Preventing Dishes” was held in the hall,. The evening of Wednesday saw yet another dressform made, the venue being the supper ro'om of the Aurora Hall, a.n*d so «tfo l>©d a't iMrs Son.ton’s. . “Thursday was spent also in Auroa and Otakeho. The Otakeho dressmaking group mat at Mrs Claude NichoU’s and re-fitted IthOilr permanent patterns, besides practising tailoring and Other finishes. Auroa’s afternoon meeting was held in the 'hall and (took the form of a public tolk dealing with the co;r-j rdclt styles fo,r various figures and the j Correct choice and use of patterns. Thu evening one was of a similar nature, the subject being the choice and -dare of materials with a draping demonstration. Friday was also fully- occupied, all the meetings being held at Otakeho. 9 a.m. found members rolling up at Mrs | le Fleming’s to take part in the class j on the use of natural roods in the diet. | Fifteen of us sat down to our luncheon of tow vegetable salads, honieminced wholemeal scones, etc. After this everyone hurried to the hall, where I had my- record meeting for the tour —about 80 members of the sur- j rounding divisions and other women interested attending to hear .the “Food and Health” lecture. "When the lecture and afternoon tea were over, those who were not- called away by farm duties stayed to see a dressform made, and to learn the useful art of “sticking.” Once more back a.t the honio of my kind hostess, Mrs lei Fleming, the dressmaking group and 1 others assembled to consider wavs and means whereby the effect of figures, faces and personality miay be enhanced ,by the right choice of clothes, and to have draping demonstrated to them. After administering this conceintralbedi dose of homo science to the AuroaOtakeho district, o,n Saturday I returned to Hawera to have a brief conference with my central advisory mimitltjee, on the results of my- tour to date, possible developments and other relevant topics. Instead Of a recipe this week, how would you like to bo..ldl'd how to re- , move grease spots from your best cos- | tuim'e so 'that you leave mo ring ? Mark , the spot with a coloured thread or pin i going through to the wrong side. Place j t'he spot right, side down on a cloth ] pad or On several .thicknesses of blotting paper. Apply benzine or other eleainier in a ring well outside the edges Of the spot and work inwards till the t whole spot is covered. Move the now j damp spot to a dry part of pad and | repeat. All traces of the spot will be. i completely remo, ved. Remember the j danger of inflammable cleansers. I all- , ways use carbon tetrachloride cleaner,' as‘it is safe, though somewhat more! costly. Any chemist would make it up j for y-ou.
