EXCURSION TO Iv.UTOKONUI. STAFF AND COUNCILLORS FOREGATHER.. Except for a high wind the weather at Kaupokonni beach on Saturday was ideal lor the Hawera county employees’ annual picnic. River bathing was' thb more popular pastime, the sand-laden wind on the sea front making the surf somewhat unpleasant. The picnic ground, however, was well-protected by the surrounding hills and sports were conducted on the terrace overlooking die river. Members of the council and cheir families also participated in the picnic and the outing was voted a complete, success. Means y,of. conveyance for a large number " was provided oy the council and the various arrangements were undertaken-by a committee consisting of Crs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman) and E.. A. Washer.and Messrs A. Muggericlge (county engineer), and J. W. J. Harding-(county clerk). Fruit, sweets, ice creams and soft drinks were distributed at intervals during the day and toys were awarded as prizes in the ''children's races.
