SPORTING

HAWERA TRACK NOTES. (By “Limited.”) Conditions were good this morning for. training operations at the Hawera racecourse. The trial grass was in good order and the plough track- was usable for pace work. Avola’s daughter, Bivolo, went verv pleasingly in a gallop over five furlongs, finishing stronger than usual in 1.61.

Chief Link and Tenacre went a workbig gallop of over a mile, coming home strongly over the last three furlongs in 43 J sec. Both horses worked well. Royal Papa put up another good effort over four furlongs, running out the distance in otysec. Royal Papa should strip in nice order for the Hunt meeting at New Plymouth next month. Silvermine is being let out a bit more seriously in his work again, and although not galloping with his accustomed freedom, sprinted three furlongs in 40sec.

Constant Sun did solid pace work in good style.

Calamine, starting slowly, from the five-furlong post, improved as she went along and was-going well at the finish of her gallop in I.IOJ. Chief Line is on the improve and strode out well in his pace work on the sand.

Davistock, Oriel and The Tiger were apportioned easy tasks. The two-year-old Golden Hair and Pesehiero sprinted a couple of furlongs smartly, Pesehiero afterwards doing steady exercise.

Fryer’s team- all did light work. Bon Eve, who has been spelling, on account of soreness, has about recovered and is to resume work again. An Australian exchange states that Copey is to remain in Melbourne to compete in the steeplechases at the Cup meeting. I. Tucker, who rides Copey in his races, intends to remain for some months in Melbourne and, if opportunities warrant, to settle there Tucker’s riding has impressed the critics and he should do well there. He has already been successful in a steeplechase and hurdle race. T. R. George is also said to be seriously considering setting up as a trainer permanently in Melbourne.

At Riccarton on Tuesday there was some interesting schooling over the steeplechase fences in the middle of the course. Lancer, The Babe, Apache and High Pitch —the latter having his first bout over the big fences—being associated. High Pitch’s performance was most impressive and, if he continues to make good in schooling over the big fences, will come into, favour for the big National event. Lueess and Billy Boy were partners over a couple of circuits." The first time Billy Boy ran off at the second fence of the double, taking his companion with him, but the second time all went well. Lueess gave the more pleasing display, jumping straight and cleanly over liis fences. Billy Boy’s exhibition was also satisfactory.

Paris did not jump straight in his effort, but landed cleverly each time. He always does better with the colours up and has proved himself over the country.
